Malaria Treatments

Dafra Pharma International has always been at the forefront of the Artemisinin based Combination Therapies (ACT's¹) for the treatment of malaria.

Since April 2001, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended the use of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT's) for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria or Uncomplicated malaria.

ACT's ensure the highest cure rates and have the potential to reduce the spread of drug resistance. They are now generally considered as the best current treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria.

As each individual country aims to offer antimalarials that are the most effective in their respective country, African countries have adopted different ACT's in their national antimalarial treatment policies.

The main determinant of policy change is the therapeutic efficacy and the consequent effectiveness of the antimalarial in use. Other important determinants include: changing patterns of malaria-associated morbidity and mortality; consumer and provider dissatisfaction with the current policy; and the availability of new products, strategies and approaches².

The following ACT's are currently recommended by the WHO

  • artemether + lumefantrine
  • artesunate + amodiaquine
  • artesunate + mefloquine
  • artesunate + sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine³

Responding to the different needs of the African countries, Dafra Pharma International can offer a wide range of antimalarial medication:
